London: A delegation led by Dr. Badri KC, President of the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA), met with His Excellency Ambassador Rob Fenn of the United Kingdom to Nepal on Monday. The meeting focused on a range of important topics, particularly bilateral relations between Nepal and the UK, investment, job creation, education, skills development, and the role of the Nepali diaspora.
During the meeting, NRNA President Dr. Badri KC highlighted the contributions of the Nepali diaspora to Nepal’s GDP, as well as their involvement in investment, education, health, employment, and charitable activities. He also informed the ambassador about the support provided by the Nepali diaspora during the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. KC mentioned that the Government of Nepal has implemented a policy to grant Non-Resident Nepali (NRN) citizenship, which includes social, economic, and cultural rights, and is also encouraging the diaspora to invest in Nepal.
Additionally, NRNA Vice President Dr. Binod Shrestha shared information on the progress of diaspora activities in Australia, particularly in the fields of knowledge, skills, and technology, and the ongoing efforts to bring these advancements to Nepal. Women’s Vice President Rosina Pradhan Rai emphasized the issue of British Gurkhas in the UK, urging that it should be addressed at the highest levels of both the Nepal and UK governments. She also provided insights into the various initiatives being undertaken by the Nepali diaspora in the UK, particularly those concerning women, children, and Nepali students.
The discussion also touched on topics such as the Nepal Festival and the second-generation diaspora.
Ambassador Rob Fenn, during the meeting, emphasized the importance of job creation for the youth and the opportunities for cooperation between Nepal and the UK in this regard. He reiterated the UK government’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties between the two nations. The Ambassador also acknowledged the crucial role that the active participation of the Nepali diaspora plays in Nepal’s development. He noted that while there have been challenges in attracting sufficient investment to Nepal, it is essential to explore solutions to increase investment. Ambassador Fenn expressed confidence in the potential for cooperation with the Nepali diaspora in areas such as education, business, and youth employment.
The meeting was also attended by NRNA Vice-President Krishna Prasad Timilsina and Chief Executive Officer Rajendra Kumar Raut.
