Spelthorne Borough Council will mark this momentous occasion by proudly raising the Commonwealth flag on Monday 10 March and celebrate the 60th Anniversary of The Commonwealth. This annual event unites millions of people across Europe, Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, America, and the Pacific, highlighting the shared values and cooperation between the 53 member nations of the Commonwealth.

The Commonwealth is a voluntary association of nations, many of which share historical ties with Britain. It is built on the principles of democracy, peace, human rights, and sustainable development, working to foster a better future for all its members. Each year, Commonwealth Day serves as a powerful reminder of the unity, diversity, and resilience of its people.

This year is particularly special as it marks the 60th anniversary of the Commonwealth Secretariat, the organisation’s executive body, which plays a vital role in strengthening global cooperation and driving positive change, collaboration and progress across member states.

The Mayor of Spelthorne, Cllr Med Buck expressed the significance of the occasion saying: “Commonwealth Day is an opportunity to reflect on and celebrate the unity, diversity, and shared aspirations of its 53 nations. As we raise the Commonwealth flag, we acknowledge our commitment to peace, prosperity, and collaboration.”
