London — His Excellency Mr. Chandra Kumar Ghimire, Ambassador of Nepal to the United Kingdom, paid a courtesy call on the Rt. Hon. Sir Lindsay Hoyle, Speaker of the House of Commons, at the Palace of Westminster on Monday, reinforcing the long-standing friendship between the two nations.

During the meeting, Ambassador Ghimire quoted the historic phrase “British Parliament is the mother of all parliaments,” originally coined by British reformer John Bright, as he praised the pivotal role the British Parliament has played globally. He conveyed greetings and a message from the Rt. Hon. Mr. Devraj Ghimire, Speaker of the House of Representatives of Nepal’s Federal Parliament.

Ambassador Ghimire also briefed Speaker Hoyle on Nepal’s inclusive parliamentary framework and the recent establishment of a Nepal-UK country-specific Parliamentary Group. He expressed appreciation for the consistent support extended by the UK’s All-Party Parliamentary Group for Nepal.

Reflecting on more than 200 years of warm bilateral relations, the Ambassador highlighted the importance of continued high-level visits and parliamentary exchanges. He underscored the need for the UK’s increased support in helping Nepal tackle the challenges of climate change, achieve its national development goals, and ensure a smooth transition from Least Developed Country (LDC) status by 2026. He also urged the UK government to address the long-standing concerns of the Gurkha community at the earliest opportunity.

In response, Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle recognized the deep-rooted and special relationship between the United Kingdom and Nepal. He welcomed continued collaboration between the parliamentary groups of both nations and reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to supporting Nepal in areas aligned with its national priorities.
