London — His Excellency Mr. Chandra Kumar Ghimire, Ambassador of Nepal to the United Kingdom, formally presented his Letter of Credence as the Permanent Representative of Nepal to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to His Excellency Mr. Arsenio Dominguez, Secretary General of the IMO, at the Organization’s headquarters in London Thursday.

Following the credential ceremony, Ambassador Ghimire briefly outlined Nepal’s growing maritime interests, emphasizing the nation’s unique position and challenges as a landlocked country. He reiterated Nepal’s intent to engage more constructively within the IMO framework to ensure greater inclusion in maritime governance and policy development.

Ambassador Ghimire also conveyed Nepal’s ongoing efforts toward the ratification of three key international instruments under the IMO and International Labour Organization: the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC, 2006), the Seafarers’ Identity Documents Convention (ILO 185, 2003), and the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW, 1978). He highlighted that these efforts demonstrate Nepal’s commitment to aligning with global maritime standards and contributing meaningfully to the international maritime community.

Commending Nepal’s initiatives, Secretary General Dominguez expressed appreciation for the country’s proactive steps toward ratification of important maritime conventions. He also shared insights into the IMO’s recent activities and highlighted avenues through which landlocked Member States such as Nepal can enhance their participation and gain broader benefits within the IMO framework.

On the occasion, a separate letter designating Mr. Bipin Duwadi, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of Nepal in London, as the Alternate Permanent Representative of Nepal to the IMO was also formally submitted to the Secretary General.

Ambassador Ghimire was accompanied at the ceremony by senior diplomats from the Embassy of Nepal in London.
