KATHMANDU: The US government has deported 140 Nepali nationals so far this year and more are expected to arrive in Kathmandu this Sunday, according to the Department of Immigration (DoI).
Sources at the DoI said the US Embassy in Kathmandu has notified them about the scheduled arrival of a large group of deportees on June 8. While the exact number has yet to be confirmed, authorities believe it could be the largest single group of Nepalis deported from the US to date.
The deportations are part of a broader crackdown on undocumented immigrants under President Donald Trump’s administration, which began on January 20, 2025. Most of those deported were reportedly found to have violated US immigration laws, including entering the country illegally or overstaying their visas.
Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, deportees are handed over to Nepal Police for initial questioning. Authorities typically inquire about their journey and any human trafficking networks that may have facilitated their travel.
The Trump administration has ramped up enforcement efforts, including the signing of an executive order shortly after taking office that targets undocumented immigrants. The US has released a list naming over 1.4 million individuals for deportation, which includes 1,365 Nepali nationals.
In comparison, just 35 Nepalis were deported from the US in 2024 during President Joe Biden’s final year in office. Under Trump, that number has risen sharply, with monthly deportations now rivaling the previous annual total.
Officials in Nepal say they are preparing to manage the incoming group and continue to monitor developments closely.
